Balasore, Jun 18: A woman was rescued by locals after a man who had offered her a lift allegedly tried to rape her near Nagram under Sadar police station limits in Balasore district, a source said on Thursday.

According to the source, the woman was travelling from Haldipada to Balasore when she accepted a lift from the accused.

Accused Allegedly Took Woman Under Bridge
The source said the man allegedly diverted from National Highway-60 towards a bridge near Nagram and dragged the woman underneath it, where he allegedly attempted to rape her.

The woman resisted and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of passersby and nearby residents, the source added.

Passersby Rush to Spot
Hearing her cries for help, locals and commuters rushed to the scene and rescued the woman.

Subsequently, the accused was overpowered by members of the public and allegedly assaulted before police arrived.

Police Rescue Accused From Mob
Sadar police reached the spot and rescued the accused from the crowd.

The accused, identified as Chandan Mallick from Odangi village in Balasore district, sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

The woman has not lodged a formal written complaint in connection with the incident at the time of filing this report.
