Love Triangle Turns Deadly in Odisha as Medical Student’s Death Sparks Serious Allegations
Chandrika’s body was recovered from the Kathajodi River, triggering a major controversy.

Key Points

Medical student Chandrika Hansda’s death in Kathajodi river takes a shocking turn as her family accuses her OAS boyfriend and his female friend of a love triangle and mental harassment leading to suicide.

Cuttack, Jun 6: The mysterious death of Chandrika Hansda, a medical student from Mayurbhanj, has taken a serious turn with her family accusing her long-time OAS boyfriend and his female friend of mental harassment and abetment to suicide.

Chandrika’s body was recovered from the Kathajodi River, triggering a major controversy. Her mother, Hiramani Hansda, has lodged a written complaint at Baranga Police Station alleging that her daughter was driven to death due to prolonged mental torture following a “love triangle”.

According to the complaint, Chandrika and her boyfriend, a resident of Sakua village under Barasahi police station limits in Mayurbhanj, fell in love 14 years ago while studying at a Navodaya Vidyalaya. Both families were aware of their relationship.

While Chandrika was pursuing her MBBS at Fakir Mohan Medical College in Balasore, her boyfriend was preparing for the Odisha Civil Services (OCS) examination. He cleared the exam last year and joined OAS training.

The family alleges that during his training, another woman entered the boy’s life, creating a love triangle. This led to the boyfriend distancing himself from Chandrika and allegedly subjecting her to severe mental harassment, in which the other woman was also reportedly involved. Chandrika was said to be suffering from depression for a long time due to this betrayal after a 14-year relationship.

The situation worsened when Chandrika was staying in Bhubaneswar. Frequent arguments reportedly took place between the couple over the other woman. The family claims that the continuous mental torture pushed Chandrika to the edge.

Four days ago, Chandrika had visited a doctor in Bhubaneswar. A medical prescription was recovered from her bag found near Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Bridge — Kathajodi River Bridge, which police have seized. Police are now in contact with the doctor.

Baranga Police have registered a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Section 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS against the OAS officer and the woman. Police have also seized Chandrika’s mobile phone and are examining call records and chats with the accused.

Speaking emotionally to the media, Chandrika’s mother said, “After 14 years of deep love, my daughter’s life was destroyed due to her boyfriend’s betrayal. Both he and his friend are responsible for her death. They harassed her and threw her into the river.”

Police are investigating whether it was a case of suicide or murder. Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari said two teams are probing the case from all angles. No injury marks were found on the body in the initial examination, but further investigation, including the post-mortem report and digital evidence, is underway.
