Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: Police in Chandaka have uncovered the shocking truth behind a gruesome murder inside a so‑called “haunted house” at Paikarapur near Bhubaneswar.

The victim, Mahini Das, was brutally beaten to death with a stick by his brother‑in‑law, Bapi Bhoi, who initially tried to disguise the crime as a supernatural accident.

On August 2, villagers discovered Mahini in a bloodied state inside the abandoned house. He was rushed to SCB Medical College in Cuttack but succumbed to his injuries two days later.

At first, Bapi claimed that Mahini had fallen from the roof after being “pushed by a ghost.” Locals believed the story until eyewitness accounts contradicted his version.

Investigations revealed that Bapi, who was caretaker of the abandoned house, had attacked Mahini with a stick. Police later arrested him after witnesses testified to the assault. Officers recovered the weapon and other evidence from the crime scene.

Chandaka police officials stated that Bapi himself had taken the injured Mahini to hospital, attempting to portray himself as innocent. His claim of ghostly involvement was a deliberate act to mislead investigators and villagers.

The case has raised further questions about the ownership of the abandoned house, why it has remained deserted for years, and whether there was a larger conspiracy to occupy the property.

During investigation, police confirmed that the victim was Bapi’s brother‑in‑law, adding a disturbing family dimension to the crime. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, leaving villagers shocked at how a family bond turned into a brutal killing.

Authorities continue to probe the circumstances, while the haunted house has once again become the centre of fear and speculation in the locality.
