Surveillance Tech / Facial Recognition Nabs Habitual Offender in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Aug 5: Bhubaneswar police have successfully apprehended a habitual offender, Tapan Nayak, with the help of advanced facial recognition technology.

The arrest was made by Capital Police Station officers after Nayak was found loitering suspiciously near the Mastercanteen bus stand area.

Upon detaining him for questioning, police ran his identity through the Facial Recognition System (FRS), which immediately flagged him as a habitual offender with multiple criminal records.

The system revealed that Nayak, a resident of Bayababa Basti under Saheed Nagar police limits, had previously served a two-year prison sentence in 2023 for theft.

Further checks confirmed that he has been involved in at least 12 criminal cases, ranging from theft to violent robberies. His modus operandi, along with his associates, involved targeting late-night passengers at railway stations and other public places, snatching mobile phones and valuables.

Police officials stated that the FRS has been instrumental in quickly identifying repeat offenders, providing instant access to their criminal history along with photographic evidence.

In Nayak’s case, the system exposed his long record of offenses, enabling officers to take swift action. Authorities believe his arrest will help curb a series of thefts and robberies that had recently troubled commuters in the city.

With Nayak back in custody, investigations are underway to trace his network of accomplices and recover stolen property. Officials assured that the crackdown on habitual offenders will continue, reinforcing public safety in Bhubaneswar.
