Mysterious Death / Police Constable Found Dead Inside Parked Car Along in Mayurbhanj; Probe Underway

Baripada, Aug 4: A police constable was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside a car parked along National Highway-18 near Padmanabhpur Chhak under Baisinga police station limits in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Monday, triggering an investigation.

The deceased was identified as Basanta Mahanta, 45, a constable posted at Baisinga Police Station. He was a resident of Jharpokharia area in Mayurbhanj district and belonged to the 2002 batch of Odisha Police.

Body Found Inside Parked Car
According to a source, a red car (bearing registration number OD11Y-XXXX) had been parked along the highway since around 11 am on Monday.

As the vehicle remained stationary for several hours, locals grew suspicious and approached it. They found a man lying motionless in the driver's seat and alerted the police.

Police Identify Deceased As Serving Constable
Baisinga police reached the spot and, during verification, identified the deceased as Constable Basanta Mahanta, who was serving at the same police station.

The body was shifted to Baisinga Government Hospital, where family members and police personnel gathered. The incident cast a pall of gloom over the hospital premises.

Case Registered, Post-Mortem Report Awaited
Police registered an unnatural death case and launched an investigation.

Officials said the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, and no conclusion has been drawn at this stage. The circumstances surrounding the death will become clear only after the post-mortem report is received.
