Puri, Aug 6: Police arrested an elderly man on charges of raping his minor great-niece in Nimapada area of Puri district.
The case came to light after the girl's father filed an FIR with Nimapada police station, a source said. Police registered a case and began an investigation.
According to the FIR, the accused raped the victim when she went outside her home at around 7pm to a nearby shop.
The accused, identified as Bighneswar Das, was taken into custody. Both the survivor and the accused were sent for medical examination, police confirmed.
Police arrested Das after the medical examination and produced him before a court, the source added.
Police and the victim's family did not immediately respond to requests for further comment. The investigation is ongoing.
10 Years Prison For Rape Convict
In a separate incident, a fast-track special court in Kendrapada district on Thursday sentenced a 19-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl, officials said.
Judge Tribikram Kesari Chinnara of the Additional Fast Track Special Court convicted the accused, identified as Manoj Mallik alias Sonu, son of Dipti Ranjan Mallik from Pattamundai police station area, authorities said.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused and ordered an additional one year of imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid, according to the judgment.

The case was registered under police station case number 370/2025 following an FIR in 2025, police said. An investigation was conducted, and a chargesheet was filed, authorities confirmed.
The court delivered its verdict after considering all evidence and witness testimony, officials said.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court directed the government to provide Rs 4 lakh in compensation to the survivor through the District Legal Services Authority, according to the judgment.
