Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: The Commissionerate Police served a notice under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to three persons accused in a case involving allegations of sexual relations on the promise of marriage and subsequent refusal to marry.
The notice -- issued to Abhilash Mohapatra, Sushil Kumar Mohapatra and Chandrakala Mohapatra from Rasulgarh area in Bhubaneswar -- directs them to appear at Mancheswar Police Station at 11 am on August 20 and cooperate with the investigation.
According to the complaint, the house owner, Sushil Mohapatra, and his wife, Chandrakala Mohapatra, had rented out rooms as a hostel. The woman who was staying there was allegedly introduced to their son, Abhilash Mohapatra, with a proposal for marriage.
The complaint alleges that Abhilash had a relationship with the woman after promising to marry her. The two families subsequently discussed the marriage and fixed a date, according to the complaint.
However, the accused family later allegedly refused to proceed with the marriage and made remarks about the woman's character, the complaint stated.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Mancheswar Police Station against Abhilash, Sushil and Chandrakala.
Police have been searching for the accused, who, according to the complaint, have allegedly remained away from their residence for about four months.
After repeated visits to the house yielded no results, Mancheswar police served the notice directing the three accused to appear before the investigating officer and cooperate with the probe.

According to the police notice, the accused have been booked under Sections 69, 351(2) and 3(5) of the BNS.
Section 69: Deals with sexual intercourse through deceitful means, including a promise of marriage made without the intention of fulfilling it, where the act does not amount to rape.
Section 351(2): Relates to criminal intimidation involving threats intended to cause alarm or compel a person to act or refrain from acting.
Section 3(5): Provides for liability when a criminal act is committed by several persons in furtherance of their common intention.
The investigation is underway.
