Bhubaneswar, Sep 3: The Commissionerate Police has busted an alleged gold chain-snatching gang that had been targeting morning walkersin and around Bhubaneswar during the early hours.
As many as five persons were taken into custody out of which police have arrested four and one is juvenile. The juvenile hails from West Bengal.
The accused include three active chain snatchers, two alleged receivers of stolen gold. Arun Kumar Sahu, a resident of Gopinathpur in Kataka district, has reportedly emerged as the alleged kingpin of the gang.
The gang had allegedly been operating for around four months and targeting people in areas including Pahala, Balianta, Mancheswar, Chandrasekharpur and Kataka Sadar.
Gang Targeted People During Morning Hours
According to the police, the accused used motorcycles to move around the targeted areas and identify people wearing gold chains. They allegedly snatched the jewellery and fled from the spot on motorcycles.

Police found that the alleged chain snatchers handed over the stolen gold to receivers after the robberies. In return, they received relatively smaller amounts of money.

Gold Jewellery, Motorcycles Seized
During the operation, police seized around 70 grams of gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 12 lakh.
The seized items include eight gold chains, one gold ring, five motorcycles, one knife and five mobile phones.
Police also found that one of the accused allegedly used money earned from the thefts to purchase an expensive Yamaha R15 motorcycle.
Police suspect that the gang may have been involved in more than 12 gold chain-snatching cases.
Police informed that the kingpin Arun Kumar Sahoo has atleast 16 cases filoed against him in various police stations in Odisha.
