Balasore, May 31: A married woman's death under suspicious circumstances, just a day after celebrating her birthday, has triggered a police investigation in Odisha's Balasore district, with her family alleging that she was murdered by her husband and in-laws.
The deceased, identified as Charchita Nayak, was the only daughter of Dinesh Nayak from Udala area in Mayurbhanj district.
According to the victim's father, Charchita had developed a relationship with Jagadish Mohanty, a resident of Chhanpur village under the Industrial Area Police Station limits. The two allegedly eloped and married at the Jhadeshwar Nath Shiva Temple on June 8, 2024.
Family members said they had opposed the marriage initially, but Charchita chose to stay with Jagadish after police produced the couple before authorities following a complaint lodged by her parents.
Following the marriage, family members had cut ties with Charchita, a source informed.
According to relatives, Charchita celebrated her 20th birthday on Saturday and shared photographs and social media posts marking the occasion. However, they alleged that a serious dispute broke out at her in-laws' house later that night.
The following morning, family members received news of her death. When they reached the hospital, they claimed to have noticed injury marks on her body, including wounds around her neck and signs of physical assault on her limbs.

In his complaint, Charchita's father Dinesh Nayak alleged that Jagadish, along with other members of the household, assaulted his daughter before strangling her and later attempting to portray the death as a su*cide by hanging.
Based on the written complaint, police at Industrial Area Police Station registered a case (No. 181/26), detained the husband for questioning and launched an investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Police said the exact cause of death will be determined after forensic and post-mortem reports are received.
