CBI Takes Over Probe Into Twisha Sharma Death Case

Key Points

CBI officially took over investigation into death of Twisha Sharma (33-year-old former actor-model), re-registering Bhopal Police FIR against husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh.
New Delhi, May 26: The Central Bureau of Investigation has officially taken over the investigation into the death of Twisha Sharma, who was allegedly found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12.

The central agency has registered an FIR against her husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh after re-registering the case earlier filed by Bhopal Police.

CBI Team Reaches Bhopal
Earlier in the day, a Special Crime unit of the CBI reached Bhopal to formally take charge of the investigation and collect relevant documents, evidence and case records from the Madhya Pradesh Police.

As per procedure, the agency re-registered the state police FIR as its own case after taking over the probe.

The CBI invoked Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, mirroring the sections already applied by the state police.

Death Reported On May 12
According to the FIR, Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh brought her to AIIMS Bhopal after allegedly finding her hanging at home around 10.20 pm on May 12.

Doctors at AIIMS informed police shortly after midnight on May 13 that she had been brought dead to the hospital, following which a medico-legal case was registered.

Post-Mortem Mentions Hanging, Injury Marks
The post-mortem report reportedly stated that the cause of death was “antemortem hanging by ligature.”

However, it also noted the presence of “multiple antemortem injuries (simple in nature possible by blunt force over other parts of the body).”

Following the post-mortem findings and statements from Twisha’s family members, Bhopal Police registered the FIR on May 15.

Family Alleges Dowry Harassment, Mental Torture
Twisha’s family alleged that she was subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws over dowry issues after her marriage on December 9, 2025.

The family accused the in-laws of mental torture, domestic violence and pushing the 33-year-old former actor-model towards taking the extreme step.

According to the FIR, Twisha had spoken to her mother over the phone around 9.41 pm on the night of the incident.

Her family alleged that during the call, Samarth Singh could allegedly be heard shouting in the background before the call was abruptly disconnected.

The FIR further stated that after repeated calls from the family, Giribala Singh allegedly answered the phone and informed Twisha’s sister-in-law that “she is no more” before disconnecting the call.

Mother-In-Law Raises Questions Over Mental Health
Meanwhile, Giribala Singh, in media interactions and legal submissions, questioned Twisha’s medical condition and mental health status.

She also raised allegations regarding Twisha’s treatment history and emotional state before her death.

Supreme Court Seeks Fair Probe
Hearing the matter on Monday, a bench of the Supreme Court of India comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said it would ensure a “fair, independent and impartial investigation” into the case.

The bench also urged both the victim’s family and the accused not to make public statements that could influence the ongoing investigation.

“We would like to impress upon the family members of the victim as well as the accused that instead of making statements in public or before a media platform, they should get their versions recorded before the investigating agency so that no prejudice or adverse impact is had on the ongoing investigation,” the bench observed.
