Drug Bust / Ambulance Full Of Ganja! 200 Kg Contraband Seized In Malkangiri

Malkangiri, Aug 13: Cops from Kalimela police station in Malkangiri district on Thursday seized around 200 kg of ganja allegedly being transported to Maharashtra in an ambulance and arrested two people in connection with the case, a source said.

The police also seized the ambulance allegedly used to transport the contraband.

Suspicious Ambulance Intercepted During Patrol
According to police, personnel from Kalimela police station were patrolling when they noticed a suspicious ambulance near Sudhakonda village under Kalimela police station limits.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police reportedly found around 200 kg of ganja concealed inside the ambulance.

Preliminary information from the police indicates that the contraband was being transported illegally from the Kalimela area of Malkangiri district to Maharashtra.

Two Maharashtra Residents Arrested
The arrested accused were identified as Somnath Sahebrao Ghayal (31) and Saurabh Nirmal (29), both from the Pune area of Maharashtra.

Malkangiri SDPO Dibya Ranjan Dalei and Kalimela police station's IIC Prabhu Dutta Biswal shared details of the seizure during a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The use of an ambulance, a vehicle meant for emergency medical services, to allegedly transport such a large quantity of ganja has drawn attention to the case.

Case Registered Under NDPS Act
Kalimela police registered a case under Case No. 180/2026, dated August 13, 2026, under Section 20(b)(ii)(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The seized ganja and ambulance have been taken into police custody as part of the investigation.

Police said further investigation is underway to establish the source of the contraband and the intended supply network.
