Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: A 26-year-old woman allegedly reported at Nayapally police station on Wednesday night that an unidentified person entered her rented apartment in Bhubaneswar and raped her.

According to a source, the woman lives in the rented apartment with her elder sister, while the property owners reside on the first floor.

The victim alleged that she was raped at gunpoint.

Forensic Team Reaches Spot
Following the complaint, an FIR was registered and senior police officers visited the spot and launched an investigation. A forensic team also reached the scene as part of the probe.

Odisha Records High Rate Of Violent Crimes In 2024
The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data cited in the report showed that Odisha recorded the country's highest rate of violent crimes in 2024 and ranked second in the rate of offences against women.

The state recorded 23,648 crimes against women in 2022, 25,914 in 2023 and 27,449 in 2024.

Odisha also recorded the second-highest number of cases of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty in 2024, with 7,299 cases. Rajasthan topped the list with 8,276 cases.

Odisha Records 75,403 Violent Crimes
According to the data provided, Odisha recorded 75,403 violent crimes in 2024, placing it fourth in terms of the total number of such cases. Bihar recorded 1,07,303 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 87,791 and Uttar Pradesh with 85,647.

The data showed that Odisha recorded a violent crime rate of 161.6 victims per lakh population, based on a projected 2024 population of 466.6 lakh. Bihar ranked second with 83 victims per lakh population, based on a projected population of 1,292.1 lakh.

The violent offences cited in the data include crimes such as murder, rape and kidnapping.

Crime rate is calculated based on the number of offences or victims per lakh population, using the mid-year projected population for 2024 based on the 2011 Census.
