Why Is Indian Stock Market Shut Today?
BSE

Key Points

  • Trading on NSE and BSE remained suspended due to a holiday for the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections.
  • Equity, derivatives, commodity, and electronic gold receipt segments were shut; evening session to resume from 5pm.
  • NSE had earlier clarified confusion, confirming the full trading holiday after an initial communication error.
Bhubaneswar, Jan 15: Trading on India’s major stock exchanges remained suspended on Thursday as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) observed a holiday in view of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections, 2026.

Both exchanges confirmed that equity, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipt (EGR) segments were shut for the day, with no trading activity between 9am and 5pm. Operations are scheduled to resume later in the evening session from 5pm onwards.

The holiday assumes significance as Mumbai, where voting is underway, is home to both the NSE and the BSE, and polling days in the state traditionally lead to a suspension of trading activities.

Earlier, there was some confusion among investors after an exchange communication suggested that trading would continue on Thursday, January 15. The NSE later issued a clarification, confirming that the day would be observed as a full trading holiday in light of the elections.

The BSE updated that contracts scheduled to expire on a given date will expire a day before.

Market participants have since been advised to take note of the revised schedule. The exchanges have also published the complete list of trading holidays for the calendar year 2026, detailing month-wise closures across different market segments.
