Cuttack, Oct 27: In a landmark move to revive ancient
maritime ties, Indonesia has been named the official partner nation for this
year’s Cuttack Baliyatra, Odisha’s largest trade and cultural fair, set to
begin here on November 5.
The announcement was made by the Cuttack district
administration, marking a significant step in globalizing the historic
festival.
Strengthening Ancient Bonds
The collaboration aims to celebrate the centuries-old maritime relationship between Kalinga (present-day Odisha) and the Indonesian archipelago. Traders from Kalinga, known as sadhabas, once sailed to Bali, Java, and Sumatra, exchanging goods, ideas, and cultural practices. This year’s Baliyatra seeks to honour that legacy by welcoming Indonesian delegates and showcasing their rich heritage.
Cultural Showcase
A dedicated Indonesian pavilion will be set up at the fairgrounds, featuring traditional handicrafts, artworks, and handmade products. Visitors will get a glimpse into Indonesia’s vibrant culture, with opportunities to interact directly with artisans and performers. The pavilion is expected to be a major attraction, adding an international flavor to the festival.

Historical Significance of Baliyatra
Baliyatra commemorates the ancient voyages of Kalinga’s
maritime traders who embarked on sea journeys during the Kartik Purnima. The
fair, held annually on the banks of the Mahanadi River, symbolizes Odisha’s
rich seafaring past and its role in fostering transoceanic cultural exchanges.
With Indonesia’s participation, the event not only pays tribute to the maritime
history but also builds bridges for future cooperation.

Officials confirmed ongoing discussions with Indonesian representatives to deepen the cultural and economic engagement. The partnership is expected to boost tourism, trade, and diplomatic goodwill between the two regions, making Baliyatra 2025 a truly global celebration.
Notably, the ‘Masakapan ke Tukad’ festival in Bali mirrors Odisha’s Baliyatra, as both honour maritime ancestors, celebrating ancient seafaring traditions and cultural exchanges through vibrant rituals and community gatherings.
