Taiwan Earthquake: Daily aftershocks drop to 89 from 314

As of 8.12 am Sunday, a total of 681 aftershocks had hit Taiwan, including two exceeding a magnitude of 6, one of magnitude 6.5, and another 6.2 that struck at 8.11 am and 10:14 am on April 3 and 24, ranging from magnitude 5 to 6, CWA data showed, as per Focus Taiwan.

Taipei [Taiwan], Apr 7: The number of daily aftershocks after a powerful 7.4 earthquake rocked Huwalien City on April 3 has shown a declining trend, reported Central News Agency Focus Taiwan, citing the Central Weather Administration's (CWA) statement on Sunday.

Data showed a decline in the daily count of aftershocks over the past few days, dropping from 314, 167, and 111 to 89.

During the recent timeframe, a total of 208 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4 to 5 were recorded.

Over the past 24 hours, there have been three earthquakes with magnitudes of 5 or higher, including a 5.2 and a 5.3 tremor at 11.52 am and 6.47 pm on Saturday, respectively, and a 5.1 quake at 5.15 am on Sunday.

Additionally, 19 earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 4 to 5 occurred within this period, as per the provided data.

According to Focus Taiwan, the magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7.58 am on Wednesday, leaving 13 dead, 1,133 injured, and six missing, as of 8 am (local time) on Sunday.

By 7.57 am on April 4, approximately 24 hours after the magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck, Taiwan experienced 314 aftershocks. As of 8.05 am (local time) on Friday, the cumulative tally rose to 481 aftershocks, and by 8.02 am on Saturday, the total reached 592 aftershocks, as per data shared by CWA.

However, a recent report published by the island's fire department stated that approximately 400 people are still stranded and waiting to be rescued, following the 7.4-magnitude temblor, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the quake increased to 13, Taiwan's National Fire Agency (NFA) said, after three bodies were recovered from a walking trail through the mountainous region. Of them, two bodies were recovered on Friday and the other on Saturday, the NFA said, while adding that the teams were still working to confirm the identities of the bodies recovered, CNN reported.

"More than a thousand people are being treated for injuries, and six persons are still missing," an official said, according to CNN.

Odisha-Born Son Or Daughter Will Be Made CM, Asserts PM at Nabarangpur

Nabarangpur, May 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Monday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party will form a government in Odisha for the first time and a son or a daughter born in the State will be made the CM, but not an outsider.

"The BJP will form a government in Odisha for the first time on June 4. I have come here to invite you to the oath-taking ceremony of a BJP CM on June 10," the Prime Minister told a huge gathering, named Vijay Sankalp Samavesh.

He said a son or a daughter born and brought up on Odisha soil and who knows the culture and language of the State and who knows the problems of the State and their solution will be made the new CM of Odisha.

The PM stressed a double-engine government for accelerating development in Odisha and making Odisha Number-One in five years.

He reiterated that all promises made in the BJP State manifesto are a Modi guarantee.

He also urged people present at the meeting venue to go to their nearby families and tell them 'Modi has wished them 'Juhar' and 'Jay Jagannath'.

ICC Assures Stakeholders After Reports Of Terror Threats To The T20 World Cup

New Delhi, May 6: Following reports that stated that Cricket West Indies had received an alleged terror threat to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council has responded. The ICC has announced that they have taken steps to mitigate any risks associated with the hosting of the marquee event.

The T20 World Cup will start on June 1 and will be played in Venues in the USA and the Caribbean.

"We work closely with authorities in the host countries and cities, and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event," ICC said in an official statement.

The Cricket West Indies also spoke about the terror threats.

"We want to assure all stakeholders that the safety and security of everyone at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place," Cricket West Indies said.

Coming to the mega event, India will begin their World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 05, 2024, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, followed by the marquee clash against Pakistan on June 09, 2024, at the same venue. India will then play the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively.

India are placed in Group A of the tournament alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and co-hosts USA. Their campaign begins on 5 June against Ireland at the newly-constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York before they take on Pakistan in one of the most awaited matches of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

PM Modi Terms Himself As "Lord of Jagannath'

Berhampur, May 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Odisha, termed himself as the son of Lord Jagannath at least three times while addressing huge Vijay Sankalp Samavesh at Kanish under the Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency today.

He started his speech by reciting 'Lord Jagannath' twice. He expressed happiness saying that he was in the land of Lord Ram (Ayodhya) yesterday and came to Lord Jagannath today. "I am very fortunate that I was talking to the people in the land of Lord of Ram yesterday and came to you in the land of Lord Jagannath today,"

During his almost 30-minute energizing speech, the Prime Minister termed himself as the son of Lord Jagannath.

"This son of Lord Jagannath is committed to taking Odisha to new heights. You cast your votes for the BJP, the son of Lord Jagannath will make Odisha the most developed State in just five years," said the Prime Minister.

Terming the manifesto of the Odisha unit of BJP as Modi's guarantee, the Prime Minister said Modi does what he promises. However, the benefits of all the Central schemes didn't reach the people of Odisha due to three major reasons.

"Modi has sent the highest amount of budgetary support to Odisha. Modi has sent money for the construction of roads in villages and the supply of tapped water to each household. But the BJD government here failed to utilize funds. It put BJD levels on Central schemes. It also misappropriated Central funds," pointed out Modi.

The State should also have a BJP government to implement Central schemes, he stressed.

Urging people to vote for the BJP's LS and Assembly candidates for a double-engine government, Modi said, "This son of Lord Jagannath assures to implement the all-benefitting Ayusman Bharat Yojana and all assurances made in the State BJP's Manifesto within days of Modi government is formed," said Modi.

He concluded his speech by requesting people present at the Vijay Sankalpa Samavesh to go to their neighbors and tell them that Modi had come and wished them "Jay Jagannath'.

"This way I will get their blessing," Prime Minister said.
