Nayagada, Sep 4: A private bus carrying more than 40 passengers from Nayagada to Bhubaneswar crashed into a roadside tree near Baunsiapada under Itamati police station limits on Friday afternoon, leaving the driver dead and over 40 passengers injured.
The private bus named, Annapurna, was travelling towards Bhubaneswar when it lost balance near Baunshiapada and rammed into a tree along the National Highway, a source said.
The impact was severe, with the front portion of the bus badly damaged. The steering wheel moved into the driver’s seat, leaving the driver trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
Following the crash, panic spread among the passengers, many of whom cried out for help. Locals and commuters alerted the police and Fire Services.

Rescue personnel reached the spot and evacuated the passengers from the damaged bus. The injured were taken to Nayagada District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Two passengers, whose condition was reportedly critical, were shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar after receiving preliminary treatment.
The bus driver died in the accident. His body was recovered after he became trapped in the bus cabin. A pair of slippers was also reportedly found near the accelerator.

MLA Helps Rescue Passengers
Nayagada MLA Aruna Kumar Sahoo was returning from Bhubaneswar to Nayagada along the same route when he came across the accident and joined the rescue operation.

Describing the severity of the crash, Sahoo said the tree had penetrated around 4 to 5 feet into the bus.
“The tree had entered around 4 to 5 feet inside the bus. All the passengers were crying for help. We opened the emergency door and rescued them. Several passengers had rods pierced through their legs,” Sahoo said.

The MLA further claimed that the bus was travelling at high speed when the accident occurred.
Itamati police reached the spot and began an investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash.
