Angul, Sep 16: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday chaired the 15th Rehabilitation and Periphery Development Advisory Committee (RPDAC) meeting of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) here in Odisha, focusing on coal production targets, land acquisition, and welfare measures for displaced communities.
Focus on Coal Production and Livelihoods
During the meeting, Minister Pradhan emphasized prioritizing public concerns and safeguarding the interests of the poor. He discussed steps to ensure fair land acquisition and enhanced compensation based on local needs. He also urged the MCL and district officials to work collaboratively to address rehabilitation challenges and ensure benefits reach affected families.
The Minister announced a coal production target of 125 million metric tonnes for the current year from Talcher and Chhendipada blocks, up from the existing output of around 100 million metric tonnes.
DMF Board Meeting: Welfare and Infrastructure
Pradhan also chaired the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) Trust Board meeting, reviewing new development and welfare projects. Discussions included investments in drinking water, healthcare, education, skill development, transportation, and environmental protection. He reiterated the importance of aligning these efforts with PM Modi’s vision for inclusive growth.

A notable highlight was the Rs1,600 crore investment in Talcher’s Pabitra Mohan Medical College, for which Pradhan thanked Coal India. The project aims to enhance healthcare access in the region.
Inauguration and Plantation Drive
The Minister inaugurated the new office of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve and participated in a tree plantation drive within the premises. He also visited the Aluminium Park and reviewed its progress, along with inspecting the medical college infrastructure.
