Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: A dispute over Rs 500 escalated into violence in the capital on Saturday, with a customer allegedly resorting to blank firing after being attacked during an argument with a shopkeeper.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Kharvelnagar Police Station, in Punjabi Colony area of Saty Nagar locality.
Argument Over Lack of Change
According to preliminary information, the altercation began when a customer purchased goods worth Rs 50 from a betel shop and handed over a Rs 500 note. The shopkeeper, identified as Dilip Kumar Rath, reportedly did not have change, leading to a heated argument between the two.
The verbal exchange soon turned violent. It is alleged that the shopkeeper and an associate attacked the customer with an iron rod.
Customer Injured, Fires in Air
The injured customer, identified as Debi Prasad Badajena, sustained a head injury during the scuffle and was seen bleeding as he attempted to flee the spot. The shopkeeper and his supporters allegedly chased him.
Police said that in an attempt to defend himself, the customer fired a blank round from a firearm in his possession. No injuries from gunfire were reported.

Police Detain Both Sides, Weapon Seized
Following the incident, police detained both individuals at Kharvelnagar police station for questioning. The firearm has been seized and an investigation is underway.
Officials said the confrontation, reportedly triggered by an argument over payment for a water bottle, quickly spiralled into violence in the busy locality.
