Bhubaneswar, Sept 22: Odisha is bracing for intense rainfall as a low-pressure system has formed over the northeastern Bay of Bengal, with another expected to develop on September 25, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). These weather systems may disrupt may play spoilsport during this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in the state.
Twin Systems Raise Concerns
The first low-pressure area, formed on Monday, has already triggered wide spread of rainfall in many places of the state. IMD forecasts that the second low pressure area may intensify into a depression, leading to widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 25 to 28. Northern and southern districts are expected to be most affected.

✨Alerts Issued Across Districts
An orange alert has been issued for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts in the state, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Yellow warnings are in place for 20 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapada. On September 23, Sambalpur and Sundargarh will also face an orange alert, with 11 other districts under yellow warning.
Sea Conditions Worsen
The IMD has cautioned that sea conditions along the Andhra-Odisha-West Bengal coast will remain rough between September 25 and 28. Wind speeds may reach 50–60 km/h, prompting advisories for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
