Odisha: Heavy Rain Lashes Twin City, Durga Puja Gates Collapse In Cuttack

Key Points

Key areas in both cities, including Badambadi, Dolamundai, Acharya Vihar, and Rasulgarh, witnessed knee-deep water, disrupting daily life and business operations.

Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Oct 1: A sudden spell of heavy rain, triggered by low pressure, battered the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on Wednesday.

In Cuttack, several decorative gates erected for the festivities were found severely damaged following the heavy downpour.

Key areas in both cities, including Badambadi, Dolamundai, Acharya Vihar, and Rasulgarh, witnessed knee-deep water, disrupting daily life and business operations.

More showers are expected over the next two days, with the possibility of thunderstorms in isolated pockets, said the IMD in its latest bulletin.

While all districts are placed on high alert following a forecast of heavy rainfall triggered by a well-marked low-pressure area over the westcentral Bay of Bengal, the IMD has warned that the system is likely to intensify into a depression by October 2 and further into a deep depression before crossing the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast early on October 3.

Rainfall Alert

According to the IMD bulletin, light to moderate rainfall is expected across 25 of Odisha’s 30 districts on Wednesday, with isolated heavy showers (7 cm to 11 cm) predicted in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.
