Odisha Braces For Heavy Rain Due To Fresh Low Pressure Over Bay Of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: The Odisha government has placed all districts on high alert following a forecast of heavy rainfall triggered by a well-marked low-pressure area over the westcentral Bay of Bengal, officials said on Tuesday.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the system is likely to intensify into a depression by October 2 and further into a deep depression before crossing the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast early on October 3.

 

IMD Issues Widespread Rainfall Warning

According to the IMD bulletin, light to moderate rainfall is expected across 25 of Odisha’s 30 districts on Wednesday, with isolated heavy showers (7 cm to 11 cm) predicted in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.

On October 2, rainfall is likely to cover all 30 districts, with moderate showers (7 cm to 20 cm) anticipated in Kandhamal, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Additional districts including Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar may receive 7 cm to 11 cm of rain.

 

Districts Mobilize for Emergency Response

In response, the state government has directed all district collectors to mobilize personnel and equipment to tackle potential waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides. Emergency teams are being prepared to ensure swift action in vulnerable areas.

 

Fishermen Warned Against Sea Venture

The IMD has also issued a marine advisory, urging fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea along and off the Odisha coast between October 1 and October 4 due to rough conditions.
