Four Assailants Rob Trader Of Jewellery Worth Lakhs

Soro, Feb 11: A jewellery shop owner was allegedly attacked and looted by four miscreants near Asimila Chhak on National Highway-16 under Soro police station limits, our source from the ground informed on Wednesday.

According to information received, the victim, Hemanta Kamila from Asimila village, runs a jewellery shop named ‘Laxmi Jewellery’ at Panpana Market. The incident took place late at night when Kamila was returning home after closing his shop.

As he reached near Asimila Chhak, four unidentified miscreants reportedly intercepted him. One of the attackers allegedly attempted to strike him on the neck with a sharp-edged weapon. In an effort to shield himself, Kamila raised his hand, following which the blow landed on his left hand instead.

He sustained serious injuries in the attack.

The miscreants allegedly looted a bag containing jewellery worth more than Rs 5 lakh that Kamila was carrying and fled the spot. Locals rescued him and admitted him to Soro Community Health Centre for treatment.

Further details regarding the condition of the injured shop owner and police action in connection with the case were awaited at the time of filing this report.

Odisha Records High Dacoity Rate: NCRB Data

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2023 report, Odisha recorded 370 cases of dacoity last year, accounting for nearly 10 per cent of the national total.

The state’s dacoity crime rate stands at 0.8, more than double the national average of 0.3. The data also shows that Odisha’s incidence of dacoity is disproportionately high compared to its population share.
