Allegations of Dowry Harassment
According to the FIR lodged by Kunita’s family, she was originally from the Rajkanika police station limits in Kendrapara district. Around 15 years ago, she married Dinabandhu Samal, son of Dwarika Samal from Jari panchayat under Binjharpur police station limits in Jajpur district.

Her family members alleged that a few years after the marriage, Kunita was subjected to physical and mental harassment by her in-laws, who allegedly demanded additional money from her parental home.

The deceased’s sister-in-law Tapaswini Rout said, “I want to know the truth. She was a very innocent person. She can never commit suicide. I think her in-laws murdered her.”

She further alleged that recently Dinabandhu had been pressuring Kunita to bring Rs 50,000 from her father and brother to open a shop.

Phone Call Before Death

Tapaswini claimed she had spoken to Kunita over the phone on Tuesday night. “She told me that her husband had taken a Rs 3 lakh loan and for the EMI payment, she had managed to arrange Rs 2,400. But her husband was demanding Rs 3,000 from her. I told her to come home as I did not have that much money. I also advised her to say no to Dinabandhu's repeated monetary demands,” she said.

Kunita’s family filed a written complaint at the police station, alleging that she was murdered.

Police detained the victim's husband Dinabandhu for questioning and launched a probe into the matter.
