Bhubaneswar, Dec 22: The cold wave has tightened its grip across several districts of Odisha as temperatures continue to plunge. With the mercury dipping steadily, residents are experiencing biting cold conditions, particularly in the northern and interior regions of the state.

Meteorological experts predict that the chill will intensify further from Christmas onwards. Following the passage of the western disturbance, dry and icy winds from the northwestern direction are expected to sweep into Odisha, leading to a sharper fall in temperatures. This weather pattern is likely to persist for several days, making the festive season colder than usual.

Reports from Similipal and nearby areas such as Upper Barakamuda indicate that the temperature has already dropped below 5°C, marking one of the lowest readings of this season. Local communities are bracing for harsher nights as the cold wave spreads to more districts.

The state government has urged citizens to take precautionary measures, especially vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Health officials have advised people to keep warm, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, and ensure adequate nutrition to combat seasonal illnesses.

Meanwhile, the chilly weather has also brought a festive charm to urban centres, with markets and streets adorned for Christmas and New Year celebrations. However, the sharp fall in temperature is expected to pose challenges in rural belts where access to heating facilities remains limited.
