Odisha / AIIMS Bhubaneswar Performs Life-Changing Orthopaedic Surgery

Key Points
Patient now walks, sits, and lives independently after years of immobility.
Surgery worth Rs25–50 lakhs was provided free under Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: AIIMS Bhubaneswar has achieved a landmark medical breakthrough, giving a new lease of life to 37-year-old Biswa Bhushan Rout from Kendrapara in Odisha. Rout, who had suffered from Ankylosing Spondylitis for nearly two decades, underwent three complex orthopaedic surgeries that transformed his life, officials said on Thursday.
Rout’s condition had caused complete fusion of his spine and hips, leaving him with a rigid deformity that bent his trunk at nearly 150 degrees. His chin almost touched his thighs, making walking, sitting, and even sleeping extremely difficult. Several hospitals across Odisha and premier institutions in India had declined his case due to the high surgical risks, including the possibility of paraplegia. Financial constraints further limited his access to private healthcare.
The turning point came when he approached AIIMS
Bhubaneswar’s Department of Orthopaedics. Under the guidance of Dr. Bishnu
Prasad Patro, Head of Department, and with the expertise of Dr. Deepak Neradi
and Dr. Gurudip Das, the team successfully performed bilateral hip replacement
and spinal deformity correction. Advanced equipment such as Neuromonitoring,
Bone Scalpel, High-Speed Burr, and Surgical Microscope were deployed, made
possible through the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas.

✨Dr. Biswas congratulated the team, praising their dedication and reaffirming AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s role as a leader in Eastern India for managing ultra-complex spinal and orthopaedic deformities. The Anaesthesia team, led by Dr. Satyajeet Mishra, ensured the surgery was completed without complications.
Today, Rout can sit, stand, walk, squat, and look straight ahead—an unimaginable transformation from his earlier immobile state. The surgery, which would have cost between Rs25 to Rs 50 lakhs in private hospitals, was provided free under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the Government of Odisha for enabling access to such transformative healthcare. This case highlights the institution’s commitment to advanced patient care and its ability to deliver world-class medical solutions to those in need.
