Shariatpur, Jan 2: A 50-year-old Hindu man is reportedly in critical state after he was violently attacked by a mob in Shariatpur district, marking yet another incident in a series of assaults on minority communities in Bangladesh.

According to reports, Das was returning home after closing his medical shop when he was ambushed. The attackers stabbed him in the lower abdomen, struck him on the head, and then doused him with petrol before setting him ablaze. In a desperate bid to save his life, Das managed to jump into a nearby pond, which extinguished the flames and prevented further fatal injuries.

He was later rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after his condition deteriorated, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

His wife, speaking to reporters, expressed shock and grief over the attack. “I don’t know who did this. We need justice. My husband is a simple man; he did not harm anyone,” she said.

This attack follows the December 24 lynching of another Hindu youth, 29-year-old Amrit Mondal, in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Mondal was allegedly killed by a mob, sparking widespread outrage.

The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government condemned the killing but insisted there was no communal angle to the violence.

Rights groups, however, have expressed concern over the repeated targeting of minorities, urging authorities to ensure accountability and protection for vulnerable communities.

The incident has sparked outrage among minority rights groups, who have long raised concerns about the safety of Hindus and other vulnerable communities in Bangladesh. Authorities are investigating the case, though no arrests have been reported at the time of writing.
