Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: Odisha continues to reel under an intense cold wave as temperatures dipped sharply across several districts on Thursday.
Early‑morning readings showed a dramatic fall in mercury levels, with Jharsuguda recording 8.6°C, leaving residents shivering in the biting cold. Interior regions such as Kandhamal and Daringbadi also witnessed severe temperature drops, touching 7°C, while Phulbani reported an even lower 5.2°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Bhubaneswar has experienced a significant decline in
temperature over the past 10 days. From 22.6°C on December 1, the minimum
temperature has steadily fallen to 13°C today at 5:30 am, marking a sharp 9.6°C
drop during this period. IMD data indicates that at least ten cities across
Odisha have recorded temperatures at or below 10°C.

Meteorologists attribute the sudden chill to strong northwesterly winds sweeping across the region, combined with clear night skies that accelerate heat loss. The IMD has warned that the cold wave conditions are likely to persist for another 48 hours, with no immediate relief expected before the weekend.

Dense fog is also expected during early mornings and late evenings, potentially affecting visibility.
The cold wave has tightened its grip not only in western and northern Odisha but also in central regions, where temperatures typically remain moderate.
As Odisha braces for two more days of severe cold,
authorities have advised vulnerable groups—especially children, the elderly,
and those with respiratory issues—to take necessary precautions. Schools and
outdoor activities may also be impacted if temperatures continue to fall.
