    Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the fully completed Doppler Weather Radar Centre at Sambalpur, formally putting into service a facility designed to give Western Odisha and adjoining parts of neighbouring states a much closer view of fast-changing weather.

    Located at Singhpali in Kainsir near Jamadarpali in Sambalpur district, the centre houses a C-Band Doppler Weather Radar with a stated surveillance range of up to 250 km.

    Its importance lies less in the building itself than in the data it can generate.

    From distant observation to an interior weather eye

    Before the Sambalpur installation, Odisha’s Doppler radar network was primarily concentrated at coastal locations such as Paradip and Gopalpur. That created a geographical limitation: sophisticated radar observation was strongest near the coast, while large stretches of western and interior Odisha remained farther from these observing points.

    The Sambalpur radar changes that geography.

    Its coverage encompasses major interior districts including Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Deogarh, Balangir, Subarnapur, Boudh, Angul and Nuapada, while its wider range extends towards parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

    For a region where thunderstorms, intense monsoon rainfall and rapidly developing convective systems can change conditions within a short period, proximity matters.

    What makes a Doppler radar different?

    A conventional weather observation may tell authorities that rain-bearing clouds are present. A Doppler radar can go considerably further.

    The Sambalpur system uses electromagnetic pulses to scan precipitation within its observation range. By analysing the signals returned from raindrops, hail and other particles, meteorologists can estimate not only where precipitation is occurring but also characteristics such as its intensity and movement.

    That makes the radar particularly valuable for short-range and near-real-time weather monitoring.

    Its applications include tracking:

    • intense and localised rainfall;

    • thunderstorms and developing convective cells;

    • hail-bearing systems;

    • wind movement associated with severe weather;

    • rain-bearing systems moving inland; and

    • the evolution of low-pressure systems and depressions as they affect the interior.

    The crucial advantage is time.

    A daily forecast may describe the weather expected over a district. Radar observation can help meteorologists watch a storm system as it develops and moves, supporting increasingly localised warnings and nowcasting.

    Why farmers may be among the biggest beneficiaries

    The practical value of the radar will ultimately be measured not by its technical specifications but by the decisions made from its data.

    For farmers in the Sambalpur-Bargarh belt, a broad forecast of rain across an entire district does not answer the most important question: Will the rain reach my field, and when?

    Radar-based monitoring can improve short-term information on the movement and intensity of rain-bearing systems.

    That can help farmers and agricultural agencies make better decisions around harvesting, spraying, field operations and protection of standing crops.

    For rural workers, commuters and communities exposed to thunderstorms, faster severe-weather warnings can similarly mean more time to move indoors or seek safer locations.

    This is particularly relevant in interior Odisha, where lightning and thunderstorm-related deaths have remained a recurring disaster-management concern.

    A second role: water and flood management

    The radar also adds another layer to the region's water-management architecture.

    Sambalpur is home to the Hirakud reservoir, whose catchment can receive substantial rainfall during intense monsoon episodes. Better observation of precipitation over upstream areas can strengthen the information available to hydrological and disaster-management agencies.

    But the radar is not a substitute for river gauges, reservoir measurements or hydrological models. Its significance is that it adds high-resolution atmospheric information to those systems.

    That can improve the understanding of where heavy rain is occurring, how intense it is and how weather systems are evolving – information that becomes particularly valuable during flood-producing rainfall.

    One Eye For Three States

    The radar's 250-km reach also gives the project a significance beyond Odisha's administrative boundary.

    Parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand fall within its broader surveillance footprint. Weather systems do not recognise state borders, and a thunderstorm developing in one state can quickly affect another.

    This makes Sambalpur potentially important as a regional observation point for central-eastern India.

    For agricultural areas of Chhattisgarh, industrial and mining belts of Jharkhand and the forested and tribal regions spread across the three-state zone, better observation of severe weather can support more timely warnings and local disaster response.

    A project that took years to reach the sky

    The radar also carries a story of delay.

    The project was conceptualised around 2013-14, but its journey from proposal to operational facility stretched across years.

    In December 2024, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari had participated in the revival-stage structural initiative after the long-delayed civil construction process moved forward.

    That earlier event and today's inauguration therefore represent two different milestones.

    The December 2024 exercise was associated with the revival and structural phase of the project. September 15, 2026 marks the formal dedication of the completed facility and its radar infrastructure by Chief Minister Majhi.

    The distinction matters because a radar centre is not simply a building with a large antenna. Its real value begins when the radar, scientific systems, communications network and operational arrangements work together to produce usable meteorological information.

    The real test begins now

    The Sambalpur Doppler Weather Radar is therefore more than another piece of meteorological infrastructure.

    It represents a shift in interior Odisha's weather architecture – from depending heavily on observations generated farther away to creating a dedicated high-resolution observation point within the region itself.

    The immediate beneficiary is Western Odisha. But the potential footprint is considerably larger.

    If its observations are effectively integrated with IMD forecasting, nowcasting, disaster-management systems, agricultural advisories and reservoir operations, Sambalpur's new radar could turn weather information into something far more useful than a generic forecast.

    For the common man, its success will ultimately come down to one simple measure:

    whether a few extra minutes – or hours – of reliable warning can translate into fewer lives lost, less crop damage and better decisions before severe weather arrives.
