Weather Alert / Odisha Braces for Week-Long Rainfall till August 16

Bhubaneswar, Aug 10: Odisha is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall as a fresh low-pressure system is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas by August 12.

According to the Meteorological Department, a cyclonic circulation currently active up to 3.1 km above sea level is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area, triggering widespread rainfall across the state.

The department has predicted rain activity for the next seven days, with heavy to very heavy showers likely for four consecutive days.

A yellow warning has been issued for 26 districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Kendrapada, Kataka, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Baleshwar, Dhenkanal, Anugola, Boudh, Debagada, Sambalpur, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Baragada, Jharsuguda, and Sundaragada.

The remaining four districts are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph.

On Tuesday, heavy rainfall is forecast for 22 districts including Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Khordha, Puri, Kataka, Baleshwar, Kendujhar, Bhadrak, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sundaragada, Baragada, Sambalpur, and Debagada. Eight other districts may experience thunderstorms with gusty winds.

The department has also warned of rough sea conditions along the Odisha coast, with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea between August 11 and 14. Rainfall activity is expected to continue till August 16, with isolated heavy showers in some districts.

In the past 24 hours, four stations recorded heavy rainfall, with Ganjam’s Patrapur receiving the highest at 80.4 mm. Since June 1, Odisha has recorded 864.3 mm of rainfall, which is 28 per cent above the normal average of 677 mm.
