Weather Alert / Odisha Braces for Thunderstorms till Sept 12 as Low-Pressure Forms over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Sep 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Odisha.

According to forecasts, the system is likely to develop by September 11 evening over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, near north Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha.

As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in several districts until September 12.

The IMD has issued an orange warning for Baleshwar, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Sundaragada, and Sambalpur districts, where wind speeds may reach 40-50 kmph.

A yellow warning has been issued for Baragada, Jharsuguda, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Khordha, Puri, Nayagada, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts, with wind speeds of 30-40 kmph.

In the past 24 hours, Odisha recorded light to moderate rainfall in several places, while isolated areas experienced extremely heavy showers. Sixteen districts reported very heavy rainfall, and 11 districts recorded heavy rainfall. Gajapati and Nabarangapur districts witnessed torrential downpours.

Since June 1, Odisha has received 1184 mm of rainfall against the normal 992.7 mm, which is 19% above average.

With the monsoon remaining active, the state is bracing for another spell of intense rain and thunderstorms over the coming days.
