Bhubaneswar, Sep 22: Odisha is bracing for intense rainfall over the next four days, with the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar issuing red warnings for several districts and forecasting extremely heavy rain at isolated places
Low-Pressure System Likely To Intensify
The well-marked low-pressure area over the westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal was persisting over the same region on September 21.
The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. According to the forecast, the system is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next few hours, followed by further intensification into a deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.
The system is expected to continue moving west-northwestwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast, reaching near the coast around the morning of September 23.

The system, which was located over the westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal at 2:30 pm on September 21, is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours and a deep depression during the subsequent 24 hours.
It is then likely to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast, reaching the region around the morning of September 23.
Red Alert For Extremely Heavy Rain
For the 24-hour period from 8:30 am on September 23 to 8:30 am on September 24, the IMD has issued a red warning for Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a few places in these districts, with extremely heavy rainfall possible at one or two places.
An orange warning has been issued for Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada districts.
A yellow warning is in place for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Baragada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada and Balangir districts.
It is then likely to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast, reaching the region around the morning of September 23.

For September 24-25, the IMD has issued another red warning for Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall possible at one or two places.
An orange warning has also been issued for Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.
Schools Shut In Ganjam, Gajapati And Khordha
Amid the forecast of adverse weather, district administrations have announced school and Anganwadi closures in several districts as a precautionary measure.
In Ganjam, all Anganwadi centres will remain closed on September 22, 23 and 24, with the district administration citing the safety of children and its “zero casualty” approach.
In Gajapati, all schools and Anganwadi centres will remain closed from September 22 to September 24 following the red warning for heavy rainfall.
In Khordha, all government, government-aided and private schools will remain closed from September 22 to September 24. The order covers institutions from Sishu Vatika to Class-XII. All Anganwadi centres in the district will also remain closed during the three-day period.
