Weather Alert / Odisha Braces for More Rain as Cyclonic System Likely to Intensify

Bhubaneswar, Aug 9: Odisha continues to experience widespread rainfall under the influence of a low‑pressure system active over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh.

In the past 24 hours, most parts of the state recorded light to moderate showers, while one location reported extremely heavy rainfall and two others recorded heavy rainfall.

Angalapur in Balangir district received the highest rainfall at 132 mm. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning were also reported from four places.

According to the Meteorological Department, the low‑pressure system is expected to persist, bringing more rain in the coming days. Gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are likely in some districts.

On August 10, coastal Odisha and northern interior districts are expected to witness heavy rainfall, while southern interior regions may see scattered showers. Districts such as Malkangiri, Koraput, Jajpur, and Kendrapara are likely to experience heavy rainfall at one or two locations. A yellow alert has already been issued for Balangir and several northern districts.

Further, on August 15, heavy rainfall is forecast for Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Bargarh, prompting another yellow alert. The department has advised residents to remain cautious and avoid vulnerable areas during intense spells.

Currently, the low‑pressure system is active over Chhattisgarh and adjoining Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. A trough line extends from Sundargarh through Angul and Khordha up to the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologists also predict the formation of a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh coast around August 11-12. This system may intensify into a low‑pressure area by August 13-14, moving towards West Bengal. Its impact is expected to increase rainfall activity in northern and coastal Odisha from August 13 onwards.

With continuous rain and alerts in place, authorities are urging people to remain vigilant as Odisha braces for another spell of heavy showers.
