Natural Calamity / Mumbai Landslide: Four Dead, Families Promised Rs 4 Lakh Aid

Mumbai, Aug 12: At least four people were killed and eight others rescued after a landslide struck houses in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar, amid heavy rains early Wednesday, officials confirmed.

Rescue operations remain underway as multiple agencies continue searching the debris for anyone who may still be trapped.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site to review ongoing rescue and relief efforts. She met affected families and offered condolences to those who lost loved ones.

“This feels like a family event. Today, we got an opportunity to get a glimpse of the life story of Ram Nath Kovind ji,” she said, urging agencies to intensify rescue efforts and improve coordination. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Avinash Dhakne and other civic officials were also present.

The Mayor announced immediate financial assistance of ₹4 lakh to the family of each victim and ₹50,000 for each injured person to support medical treatment.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident occurred at around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar. A portion of a hillock collapsed, sending soil and debris onto two to three houses in Ashok Nagar, Tekdi No. 3.

Officials initially feared five to six people were trapped. A senior Mumbai Police official later confirmed that eight people had been rescued, of whom four were declared dead.

Rescue teams face challenges due to the narrow lanes leading to the site. Personnel from the BMC, Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Mumbai Police, and ambulance services are working together to locate and evacuate survivors.

Authorities said operations are continuing, with the administration closely monitoring the situation. The landslide comes as Mumbai experiences heavy rainfall, raising concerns over vulnerable settlements near hill slopes.
