Weather Alert / Monsoon Covers Odisha; Heavy Rain to Lash Southern Districts

Bhubaneswar, Jun 23: The southwest monsoon has now covered the entire state of Odisha, ushering in widespread rainfall and setting the stage for an active wet spell. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, has forecast rain activity for the next five days, with varying intensity across districts. The forecast includes thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy showers, officials said on Tuesday.
Weather Forecast for Next 24 Hours
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are very likely at one or two places in districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Similarly, thunderstorms with winds of 30–40 kmph are expected in Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh. Heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts. A yellow weather warning has been issued for all these districts.
Rainfall Pattern
Kalbaishakhi showers are expected to continue till June 25, while heavy rainfall is likely in southern Odisha districts on June 26 and 27. The department has cautioned residents about thunderstorms and strong winds.
Cyclonic Circulations

✨Meteorologists have indicated the formation of a cyclonic circulation over south Odisha and north Andhra coast around June 25, which may trigger further rainfall. Another circulation is likely over the northwest Bay of Bengal around June 29, potentially intensifying into a low-pressure system.
July Outlook
According to SOA CEC chief Sarat Chandra Sahu, a low-pressure area is expected between July 2 and 4, which could bring widespread rainfall across Odisha in the first week of July. This is likely to strengthen the monsoon’s impact in the state.
Alerts and Advisories
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea on
June 23 and 24 due to rough conditions, with wind speeds expected to reach
40–50 kmph along the coast.

Temperature Trends
Despite the monsoon’s arrival, maximum temperatures are unlikely to see significant changes over the next week. Interior Odisha continues to experience warm conditions, contributing to the prevalence of Kalbaishakhi activity.
The forecast signals an active monsoon phase, with cyclonic circulations and low-pressure systems expected to enhance rainfall in Odisha through late June and early July.
