Weather Alert / Cyclonic System Brewing, Odisha Braces for Heavy Rain

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19: A cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas is expected to develop into a low‑pressure system by Saturday evening, according to the regional meteorological department.

The system is forecast to move west‑northwest, gradually intensifying into a depression over the east‑central Bay of Bengal by September 21, and further into a deep depression over the west‑central Bay by September 22.

By September 23 morning, the system is likely to reach the west‑central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast.

The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall across Odisha from September 22 onwards. An orange alert has been issued for all districts in south Odisha, predicting heavy to very heavy showers.

If the system shifts northward, coastal and interior districts in northern Odisha could also experience intense rainfall. Overall, 20 districts are expected to be affected, with district collectors advised to remain vigilant.

Ahead of the possible cyclone, the State Disaster Management Department held a review meeting chaired by Minister Suresh Pujari.

“We are in constant touch with IMD. The system is currently near Thailand and will reach the Andamans tomorrow. In two days, it may intensify into a cyclonic storm. A clearer picture of its track will emerge by tomorrow evening. Collectors of 20 districts in the yellow zone have been alerted, and others have also been asked to stay prepared. By September 23, the circulation may transform into a low‑pressure system. People should not panic,” Pujari said.

Control rooms have been activated, and precautionary measures are being coordinated to minimize risks.

With forecasts pointing to heavy rainfall and possible storm conditions, Odisha remains on high alert.
