Bhubaneswar, Mar 21: Odisha continues to experience the impact of the seasonal Kalbaisakhi phenomenon, bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several districts.
Despite no specific weather system currently prevailing over the state, the influence of Kalbaisakhi has kept showers active, leading to a notable dip in daytime temperatures.
According to the Meteorological Department, the state’s
average maximum temperature is presently 3.9°C below normal. However, rainfall
activity is expected to reduce after the next 24 hours, with daytime
temperatures likely to rise again. Fresh spells of Kalbaisakhi showers are
forecast to return from March 25.

Additionally, Yellow Alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur districts, where heavy rainfall is anticipated.
In the past 24 hours, Jharsuguda’s Laikera recorded the highest rainfall at 104 mm, followed by Mayurbhanj’s Jamda at 74 mm. On the temperature front, Chandbali registered the highest maximum temperature at 36.6°C, while Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 35.2°C and 34.4°C respectively.
The Kalbaisakhi phenomenon, common during the pre-monsoon season in eastern India, often brings sudden squalls, heavy rain, and lightning. While it provides relief from rising temperatures, it also disrupts daily life and poses safety hazards.
With alerts in place, the state administration is on high
vigil, and citizens are advised to stay updated with official weather
bulletins.
