Key Points

Odisha faces a severe heatwave with Jharsuguda hitting 40.8°C. Relief is expected between March 15-19 as thunderstorms, rain, and hailstorms may bring respite across several districts.

Bhubaneswar, Mar 13: Odisha is currently experiencing extreme heat conditions, with the mercury crossing 40°C in several districts. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a heatwave alert for Jharsuguda and Sambalpur for the next 48 hours.

On Thursday, Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature at 40.8°C, making it the hottest city in the state. Hirakud registered 39.2°C, while Sambalpur and Sundargarh, meanwhile, touched 39°C. Bhubaneswar reported 38.6°C and Cuttack 35.6°C. Nearly 25 locations across Odisha recorded temperatures above 35°C, with forecasts suggesting a further rise of 2-3°C in the next 24 hours.

This marks the first time in the season that Odisha’s temperature has crossed the 40°C threshold. The intense heat has already begun to affect daily life.

However, relief may be on the way. The Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall across many parts of the state between March 15 and 19. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected in districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Bhadrak. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in some areas. Wind speeds during this period may reach 40-50 km per hour.

The rainfall forecast is attributed to atmospheric disturbances and the influence of a trough line over the region. Already, light showers have been reported in parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Bhadrak, which slightly reduced temperatures locally.

While western Odisha continues to reel under severe heat, the upcoming showers are expected to provide much-needed respite. Farmers, in particular, are hopeful that the rains will ease the impact of the early summer heat and benefit agricultural activities.

With the state caught between scorching heat and the promise of rain, Odisha’s weather is set to undergo a dramatic shift in the coming week.
