Shimla Chokes Under Tourist Surge; 70,000 Vehicles Enter in 72 Hours Amid Summer Spell

Key Points

Nearly 70,000 vehicles entered Shimla within 72 hours as tourists escaped extreme heat in the plains. Authorities introduced special traffic measures after over 6.31 lakh vehicles reached the hill station in 24 days.
Shimla, May 27: A sudden spike in tourist arrivals has placed Himachal Pradesh under pressure, as Shimla witnesses critical traffic congestion after travellers rush to the chilly hill station to escape the intense heat conditions. The sudden influx observed weeks ahead of the usual peak summer season, exposing long-standing infrastructure challenges in the state.

As per the officials, approximately 6,31,000 vehicles entered Shimla, turning the sceneric hill destination into a traffic bottleneck in just over a 24-day period. Furthermore, the situation escalated with nearly 70,000 vehicles entering the city within a time span of just 72 hours, severely affecting the mobility across key routes.

The maximum share of the traffic has come via Chandigarh–Kalka corridor, accounting for around 3,70,000 vehicles. The remaining rush has been recorded through roads connecting Kinnaur, Bilaspur, and Kullu.

The hill town, is now getting suffocated with clogged roads, packed spaces, slow-moving traffic, and inadequate parking availability.

The surge is being driven primarily by heatwave conditions hit across several northern and western Indian states prompting residents to head toward cooler hill stations.

The rapid tourist influx in Shimla has forced the administration to implemented a zonal traffic management system, dividing the city into five operational zones, each overseen by a senior officer to streamline coordination and enforcement. Ttraffic police and volunteers have been deployed across key routes to ease severe congestion.

Despite administration's continuous interference to manage traffic, the congestion still persist across major tourist corridors, with over 1,54,450 vehicles entering Shimla in just the past week alone. The continuing rise in arrivals clearly shows that the traffic pressure on the mountain station is unlikely to ease in the immediate future.

Nevertheless, the situation is expected to become even more hectic after May 31, as tourist inflow is projected to increase further in June. Himachal Pradesh usually sees its peak tourist season in early June, but this year’s early hot spell have effectively advanced the tourist dash.

The current scenario of the striking hill station highlights a recurring challenge for Himalayan tourist destinations: balancing surging seasonal tourism demand with fragile road infrastructure and limited urban capacity.
