Key Points
From majestic sea turtles gliding through the ocean to the humble tortoises slowly marching across land, these creatures face increasing threats—habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. Every small action we take can make a difference in their survival.
Bhubaneswar, May 23: On May 23rd, we celebrate one of nature's most ancient and remarkable creatures—turtles. These resilient beings have roamed the Earth for over 200 million years, witnessing the rise and fall of countless species. Yet today, they need our help more than ever.
From majestic sea turtles gliding through the ocean to the humble
tortoises slowly marching across land, these creatures face increasing
threats—habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. Every small action
we take can make a difference in their survival.
And here in Odisha, we are privileged to witness one of nature’s greatest
spectacles—the mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles. Every year, thousands of
these vulnerable sea turtles arrive at the shores of Gahirmatha, Rushikulya,
and Devi river mouths, turning our coastline into a sanctuary of life. This
ancient ritual, known as 'Arribada,' is a breathtaking reminder of Odisha’s
role in preserving these magnificent creatures.
The theme for World Turtle Day 2025 is "Dancing Turtles Rock!". This theme encourages people to celebrate turtles by learning about them, raising awareness about their conservation, and engaging in fun activities, including dancing.
