New Delhi, Oct 15: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom service providers to introduce Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) from November 1, 2026, enabling mobile users to see the caller's name alongside their phone number.
Under the directive, CNAP will be introduced by default across 4G and higher-generation mobile networks, including 5G. The rollout on 2G and 3G networks, as well as public switched telephone networks, will be considered separately, according to the DoT circular.
The service is designed to display the name recorded in the originating telecom operator's subscriber database when a call is received from a number that is not saved in the recipient's contacts.
How Will Caller Name Display Work?
When a call comes in, the first field on the screen will display the caller's phone number, while the second will show the caller's name.

If the number is saved in the recipient's contacts, the name stored there will be displayed. If it is not saved, the name recorded in the originating telecom operator's subscriber database will appear for domestic calls. For international calls, the display will show “International Call”.
Telecom service providers will have to establish and maintain databases linking subscribers' names with their phone numbers. The operator receiving a call will retrieve the relevant name and display it to the recipient.
Privacy Safeguards Under CNAP
The DoT circular directs telecom operators to follow a security-by-design approach. Under this requirement, the caller's name must not be retained through the system's query-response mechanism after the incoming call ends.
The names of users who have opted for the Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) facility will not be displayed.
Special Provision For Business Connections
For business and bulk connections, telecom operators may allow subscribers to display a verified preferred name instead of the name recorded in their subscriber database.
The preferred name must be either a trademark registered in the user's name with the Trade Marks Registry or a trade name registered on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal.

Operators will have to verify the name and supporting documents before approving the request. Existing subscribers will also have to apply to update their preferred names.

Rollout Follows TRAI Recommendations
The directive follows trials conducted by telecom service providers on 4G and higher-generation networks. It also draws on recommendations made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on the introduction of CNAP.
TRAI issued its recommendations in February 2024. In October 2025, it considered the DoT's proposal to make the service available by default, although its original recommendation had proposed activation on request.
The November 1 deadline marks the planned introduction of CNAP across 4G and higher-generation mobile networks, with the rollout on older networks and landline services to be considered separately.
