UPI fraud attempt exposed at Sonepur’s Minabazar as youth shows fake payment screen; shopkeeper alerts police, suspect detained, traders urged to verify digital transactions during festive rush.

Sonepur, Oct 21: The festive shopping season has brought bustling crowds to Odisha’s markets, but it has also opened the door for fraudsters exploiting digital payments.

A serious case of UPI payment fraud surfaced at Minabazar in Sonepur block on Tuesday, highlighting the risks faced by shopkeepers during peak business hours.

According to reports, a young man purchased items from a stall and claimed to have paid via PhonePe. He showed the shopkeeper a “payment successful” screen on his mobile phone.

However, when the shopkeeper checked his bank account, no money had been credited. Suspicion quickly arose over the youth’s actions.

The Minabazar owner detained the suspect and alerted Sonepur police. Officers arrived at the scene and questioned the man, who allegedly admitted to the fraudulent attempt. He was subsequently taken into custody.

Following the incident, the market owner urged fellow traders to remain vigilant. He advised shopkeepers not to rely solely on the customer’s mobile screen but to confirm that funds have actually been deposited into their accounts before handing over goods.

Police have warned that fraudsters are increasingly using fake UPI confirmations to deceive shopkeepers, especially during crowded festival markets. Authorities stressed the importance of verifying every digital transaction to prevent losses.

The case serves as a reminder that while digital payments offer convenience, they also require caution.

With festive sales surging, shopkeepers across Odisha are being urged to double‑check transactions and remain alert against such scams.
