A Leap in Defence Innovation As India's VLSRSAM Takes Off

Key Points

India’s defence sector gets a cutting-edge edge with DRDO and Navy’s latest missile breakthrough.

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi, Mar 26: India achieved a landmark feat in defence technology on Wednesday with the successful flight test of the indigenously-developed Vertically-Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM).

Conducted jointly by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, the test underscored India's growing self-reliance and expertise in advanced defence systems.

The VLSRSAM, a cutting-edge missile system designed for precision targeting, was tested using a land-based vertical launcher. It effectively destroyed a high-speed aerial target at close range and low altitude, validating its agility, reliability, and pinpoint accuracy.

The missile, equipped with an indigenous Radio Frequency seeker, was deployed alongside other advanced components like the Multi-Function Radar and Weapon Control System, which performed seamlessly in combat configuration.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO, the Indian Navy, and industry partners for this achievement, calling the missile "an excellent force multiplier" for India's naval forces. He emphasized that the system highlights India's robust design and development capabilities in defence technology.

DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat echoed these sentiments, noting that the advanced missile will provide a significant technological boost to the armed forces.

The flight data, meticulously captured by range instruments developed at ITR Chandipur, reaffirmed the missile's performance. The successful test strengthens India's defence capabilities and reinforces the nation’s vision of "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) in defence production.

This achievement stands as a testament to India's growing prowess in developing next-generation defence systems, further solidifying its position as a global leader in military innovation.
