Madrid, Jan 13: Real Madrid wasted no time in making a bold managerial change after their painful 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Less than 24 hours after the loss, the club announced the departure of manager Xabi Alonso and confirmed the appointment of former defender Alvaro Arbeloa as his successor.
The decision came as a shock to many, given Alonso’s
relatively short tenure at the helm. Despite signs of improvement in recent
matches, the Clasico defeat proved to be the final straw for the Madrid
hierarchy. The move has sparked intense debate across Spain, with fans and
pundits questioning whether Alonso was given enough time to implement his
ideas.

Arbeloa Steps In
Alvaro Arbeloa, 42, is no stranger to the Santiago Bernabéu. A former Real Madrid stalwart, he made 238 appearances for the club between 2009 and 2016, winning eight trophies including two Champions League titles and one La Liga crown. He was also part of Spain’s golden generation, lifting the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
Since retiring, Arbeloa has built a coaching career within Madrid’s youth academy. He began with the Under-14s in 2021, progressed to the Under-16s, and later guided the Under-19s to remarkable success, including a treble in the 2022-23 season and a league title in 2024-25. Most recently, he was in charge of Castilla, Madrid’s reserve side, from June 2025. His promotion to the senior team reflects the club’s faith in his ability to nurture talent and instill discipline.

French superstar Kylian Mbappe, who joined Madrid in 2025, paid tribute to Alonso on Instagram. “It’s been short, but it was a pleasure to play for you and learn from you,” he wrote.
Barcelona’s Reaction
The sacking quickly became a hot topic in Spain, with Barcelona sporting director Deco weighing in during an interview. “The truth is that it surprised me. He has not been there long. He’s basically just started. They are in the Champions League and only four points behind Barça in La Liga,” Deco remarked. He acknowledged the pressure surrounding Clasico fixtures, noting that “coaches are the first to suffer.”
On Arbeloa’s appointment, Deco remained cautious: “I don’t know his work and whether or not he’s a good coach. In these cases, I prefer to focus on our work and wait to see how everything goes.”
Looking Ahead
Real Madrid’s gamble on Arbeloa signals a desire to blend continuity with fresh energy. His deep ties to the club and proven track record in youth development may prove vital in stabilizing the squad.
However, the challenge ahead is immense: Madrid remain in
the Champions League and trail Barcelona by just four points in La Liga. The
coming weeks will determine whether Arbeloa can rise to the occasion and
deliver results under intense scrutiny.
