Virat Kohli's 52nd ODI Century Celebration Marred by Shocking Security Lapse

Key Points

  • A fan breached security and grabbed Virat Kohli’s feet during his 52nd ODI century.
  • Rohit Sharma broke Shahid Afridi’s world record for most ODI sixes.
  • India dominated with a 136-run stand between Rohit and Kohli in Ranchi.
Ranchi, Nov 30: A security breach at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi momentarily disrupted India’s commanding performance against South Africa on Sunday, when an intruder sprinted onto the field and clung to Virat Kohli’s feet just as he celebrated his 52nd ODI century.

The incident unfolded in the 37.5th over, moments after Kohli sliced Marco Jansen through backward point for a boundary to reach his landmark. As the stadium erupted, a young fan managed to leap past barricades and evade multiple layers of security before rushing straight to the pitch. He slid at Kohli’s feet while non-striker KL Rahul looked on in surprise.

Security personnel swiftly intervened and escorted the intruder off the ground. Kohli, however, signalled the guards not to handle the fan harshly before resuming play. The situation, though alarming, ended without any harm.

The day also belonged to India’s skipper Rohit Sharma, who notched up yet another major milestone by breaking Shahid Afridi’s long-standing world record for most sixes in ODIs. Afridi retired with 351 sixes; Rohit surpassed the mark by hammering his 352nd maximum during a sparkling innings.

Batting first, Rohit and Kohli stitched a superb 136-run stand for the second wicket, steadying India after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early departure. The duo’s stroke-filled partnership powered India to a strong position and set the tone for a dominant performance.

Before the start of the match, stand-in skipper KL Rahul said the team will be ‘more excited’ if the legendary MS Dhoni turns up to watch the opening ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium. India are looking to rebound from a 2-0 Test series defeat to South Africa through the ODI series opener in Dhoni’s hometown.

Rahul debuted in ODIs under Dhoni’s captaincy with a century in Harare in 2016, and is set to reprise a dual role which the latter played for a long time - taking the wicketkeeping gloves while leading the side from behind the stumps and batting as a finisher.
