New Delhi, Sep 12: The hum of floodlights at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday night carried more than just the sound of cricket balls hitting practice nets. It carried anticipation. India’s preparations for the upcoming clash were in full swing, and at the centre of it all was Jasprit Bumrah.

After a brief drizzle pushed back the start, the pace spearhead strode in with intent, his deliveries sharp and purposeful. This was not a bowler cautiously probing his fitness, but one rediscovering rhythm and confidence.

Having missed the third ODI against England and two Tests in Sri Lanka due to a knee injury sustained while fielding in Cardiff, Bumrah’s return to the nets signalled resilience and readiness.

The mood lightened when Bumrah engaged in a brief duel with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who had once taken him for six off the first ball he faced in the IPL.

This time, Bumrah beat the bat and followed up with a searing yorker. It was a reminder of his competitive edge and India’s growing strength as they near full fitness.

Yet Sunday’s contest is about more than Bumrah or India. For years, Afghanistan’s home matches were played in India, with venues in Greater Noida, Dehradun, and Lucknow serving as their bases.

Their inaugural Test six years ago was in Bengaluru, against India. The BCCI and Indian cricket ecosystem were central to Afghanistan’s rise as a formidable international side.

Now, for the first time, Afghanistan will officially host India in a bilateral series. Though the hosting rights are administrative, the symbolism is powerful.

India had hosted Afghanistan two years ago in a thrilling series that ended with a double super over in Bengaluru. This time, the roles are reversed: Afghanistan are the home side, India the visitors.

The familiarity with New Delhi runs deep for Afghanistan. The city is home to a strong Afghan diaspora and was the stage where they stunned England at the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are household names in India thanks to their IPL exploits. On Sunday, they will use that knowledge against India before a crowd that will cheer both sides.

Afghanistan no longer arrive as underdogs seeking exposure. They are now a strong T20 outfit with a spin arsenal capable of troubling the best.

Ibrahim Zadran, Gurbaz, and Sediqullah Atal provide batting firepower, particularly suited to Kotla’s short square boundaries, though the middle order must overcome inconsistency.

Under new captain Zadran and coach Richard Pybus, Afghanistan are rebuilding after their early exit at the T20 World Cup.

India’s batting depth is impressive, but the top order remains unsettled. Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Sooryavanshi cannot all be accommodated without reshuffling.

India have lost six of their ten T20Is this year under Shreyas Iyer, making the decision critical. Ishan Kishan, fresh from a double hundred in the Duleep Trophy, looked fluent against spin, though his fitness is uncertain after pulling up his back on Friday.

Iyer, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, and Axar Patel also impressed in practice, and their contributions will hinge on the platform set by the top order.

India’s bowling resources are strengthening. Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy return, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy add depth, and the squad is close to full strength after a spate of injuries. Bumrah and Sooryavanshi have never played a T20I together, a reminder of how quickly this side evolves.

For Afghanistan, the Yamuna Sports Complex has been a training ground, and now Kotla is their home venue until Thursday. The symbolism is striking: a team that once relied on India for facilities now hosts India in their own adopted backyard.

Nobody arranged this out of charity. Afghanistan have earned their place through relentless effort and big‑stage performances.

On Sunday, they stand shoulder to shoulder with India, the reigning T20 World Cup holders, in a contest that reflects how far they have come.
