Guwahati, Sep 30: Captain Shubman Gill produced one of the greatest ODI innings of all time, smashing an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls as India completed their highest successful run chase in One-Day Internationals, overhauling a daunting target of 406 against West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati on Wednesday.

India reached 406 for the loss of just one wicket in 43.3 overs, winning with 39 balls to spare and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gill breaks records

The 26-year-old rewrote the record books by scoring the fastest double century in ODI history, reaching the landmark in just 117 deliveries. Earlier in the innings, he had also registered the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian captain.

Gill's unbeaten 223 was also the highest score by an Indian batter in a successful ODI run chase, anchoring a remarkable pursuit of West Indies' mammoth total.

Rohit provides ideal support

Veteran opener Rohit Sharma gave India the perfect platform with a blistering 101 off just 72 balls. During his innings, Rohit became only the third Indian batter to complete 12,000 ODI runs, joining an elite club.

The opening pair dominated the West Indies attack from the outset, turning what appeared to be an improbable chase into a one-sided contest.

West Indies' effort goes in vain

Earlier, West Indies posted 405/7, their highest ODI total, powered by sparkling centuries from John Campbell (100), Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114).

Campbell's century came off just 65 balls, the fastest ODI hundred by a West Indies batter against India. However, the visitors' record-breaking effort was overshadowed by India's extraordinary batting display.

For India, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each, with Kuldeep also completing 200 ODI wickets.

The victory marked only the second successful chase of a 400-plus target in ODI history, after South Africa's famous chase of 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
