Sanju Samson with MS Dhoni – New CSK Chapter

Key Points

Sanju Samson, fresh off his Player of The Tournament award at the T20 World Cup 2026, has finally opened up about his much‑talked‑about exit from Rajasthan Royals and his blockbuster ₹18 crore move to Chennai Super Kings.  After years as the calm leader and star batter for the Royals, Samson admitted it was time for a new chapter, and the chance to learn directly from MS Dhoni made the decision irresistible.
New Delhi, Mar 18: After the fresh T20 World Cup heroics, Sanju Samson opens up on leaving Rajasthan Royals and starting a new journey with Chennai Super Kings. The ₹18 crore move reunites him with MS Dhoni, a mentor he deeply admires. “It’s a dream to learn from Dhoni bhai,” Samson said, as he gears up for IPL 2026 in yellow.

For years, Sanju Samson embodied the Rajasthan Royals-calm leader, elegant stroke‑maker, and the batter who carried the franchise to the IPL 2022 final. Now, the T20 World Cup hero is set to begin a new chapter with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026, following a high‑profile trade worth ₹18 crore last year.

The move has already set the cricketing world buzzing. With Dhoni’s mentorship and CSK’s winning DNA, Samson’s arrival adds a fresh spark to the franchise. For fans, it’s not just a transfer, it’s the beginning of a thrilling new chapter in IPL history.

Samson admitted that leaving the Royals was an emotional decision, but the opportunity to play under the shadow of MS Dhoni was simply irresistible. “It’s a dream for any cricketer to learn from Dhoni bhai. I’m looking forward to growing as a player and contributing to CSK’s legacy,” he shared.

Samson’s departure from the Royals had long been a subject of speculation. The franchise revealed he wanted to leave midway through the 2025 season, but the Kerala star himself stayed silent, until now. Speaking to the media in Thiruvananthapuram, the 31‑year‑old admitted, “I left Rajasthan Royals because I felt my time in the team was over. Even if we come up against them now, I will play my best cricket.”

That clash could come immediately. CSK’s campaign begins against the Royals on March 30 in Guwahati, setting up a dramatic reunion in Samson’s very first outing in yellow.

Yet, sentiment is not what excites him most. Instead, it’s the chance to share a dressing room with MS Dhoni. “I always had positive vibes after interacting with Dhoni bhai. This will be different as I’ll spend close to two months with him in CSK. It’s a great opportunity to observe him closely and learn,” Samson said.

The move comes at a time when Samson is in peak form. At the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he hammered 321 runs, including match‑winning knocks against West Indies and England. With scores of 97, 89, and 89 in his last three innings for India, Samson arrives in Chennai brimming with confidence and ready to script a new legacy.
