Roger Binny Steps Down As BCCI President, Rajeev Shukla Named Acting Chief

Key Points

Roger Binny resigns due to age cap; Rajeev Shukla appointed interim BCCI President.

Dream11 sponsorship ends; board urgently seeks new sponsor before Asia Cup.

New Delhi, Aug 29:  Former India pacer Roger Binny on Friday stepped down as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), citing the age cap stipulated in the board’s constitution.

Veteran cricket administrator and current Vice-President Rajeev Shukla has taken over as the acting president until fresh elections are held.

Binny, who turned 70 last month, became ineligible to continue under the Supreme Court-mandated Lodha Committee reforms, which restrict office bearers from serving beyond that age. Although the recently passed National Sports Governance Bill raises the age limit to 75, it has not yet been formally notified, and the BCCI continues to operate under its existing constitution.

The BCCI’s Apex Council convened earlier this week under Shukla’s leadership to address urgent matters, including the termination of Dream11’s sponsorship contract. With the Asia Cup 2025 set to begin on September 10, the board is racing against time to secure a new long-term sponsor for Team India.

Shukla, known for his extensive experience in cricket administration, will oversee the board’s operations during this transitional phase. His immediate priorities include finalizing sponsorship deals, managing team selections, and preparing for the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), where elections will be conducted under the current rules4.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has clarified that all elections, both at the national and state levels, will follow the existing framework until the new law is enacted. This means the age cap of 70 remains in force for now, affecting not just the BCCI but also affiliated state associations.

Binny’s departure marks the end of a tenure that began in October 2022, following Sourav Ganguly’s exit. His leadership saw key developments in domestic cricket and international scheduling, but the age restriction rule ultimately led to his resignation.
