Renuka, Deepti Star as India Seal T20I Series Against Sri Lanka
India beat Sri Lanka in 3rd T20I.

Key Points

  • India Women beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in 3rd T20I.

  • Shafali Verma scored unbeaten 79 off 42 balls.

  • Renuka Singh (4-21) and Deepti Sharma (3-18) starred with the ball.

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 26: India Women sealed the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with a commanding eight-wicket victory in the third match at the Greenfield International Stadium, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead. The win was fashioned by a superb all-round performance, highlighted by Renuka Singh Thakur’s incisive bowling, Deepti Sharma’s record-breaking spell, and Shafali Verma’s explosive batting.

Renuka and Deepti Shine with the Ball

Sri Lanka, asked to bat first for the third consecutive time, managed only 112/7 in their 20 overs. Renuka Singh Thakur returned figures of 4-21, striking crucial blows to dismantle the top order. Deepti Sharma, with 3-18, not only tightened the screws but also etched her name in history by becoming the first cricketer across men’s and women’s T20Is to achieve the double of 1000 runs and 150 wickets. She also equalled Australia’s Megan Schutt as the joint-highest wicket-taker in women’s T20Is with 151 scalps.

Shafali Verma’s Blazing Knock

In reply, India’s chase was spearheaded by opener Shafali Verma, who smashed an unbeaten 79 off just 42 balls, laced with 11 fours and three sixes. Despite early setbacks with Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues falling cheaply to Kavisha Dilhari, Shafali’s aggressive strokeplay ensured India crossed the line in just 13.2 overs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur provided steady support with 21 not out, as India showcased their batting depth and dominance.

Sri Lanka’s Resistance Falters

Sri Lanka’s innings had brief moments of resistance, notably a 40-run stand between Imesha Dulani (27) and Kavisha Dilhari (20). However, consistent breakthroughs from India’s bowlers prevented any substantial recovery. Kaushini Nuthyangana’s late unbeaten 19 helped Sri Lanka cross the 110-run mark, but the total proved inadequate against India’s batting firepower.

India’s Winning Streak

The victory marked India’s fourth consecutive T20I series triumph over Sri Lanka, underlining their superiority in the format. With two matches remaining, India will look to continue their winning momentum and provide opportunities for younger players.
