Cuttack, Nov 1: The iconic Barabati Stadium in Cuttack is set to host a high-stakes Ranji Trophy Group A encounter as Odisha will take on Andhra Pradesh in their third match of the season, starting today.

The home team, Odisha, will be looking to register their first win of the tournament, having played two matches so far and securing just one point.

This match is crucial for both sides as they aim to climb the Group A standings and keep their hopes alive for qualification to the knockout stages.

Team management has hinted at possible changes in the playing XI to strengthen the batting lineup, which has struggled in the previous outings.

Ranji Trophy is a Test competition, with a round-robin stage of 4 days and a knockout stage of 5 days, including group round-robin, knockout and final. Each match day usually has 90 overs. Therefore, a maximum of 360 overs can be played in a 4-day match and a maximum of 450 overs in a 5-day match. In case of weather or special circumstances, the referee may decide to add extra overs to ensure the integrity of the match.

Ranji Trophy adopts the Two-Innings format, which means each team has two chances to bat.  The overall rules are similar to Test Cricket:

Round Robin Stage (4 days): If the match is tied, the winner is determined by the First Innings Lead (as per BCCI Rule 12.3).

Knockout Stage (5 days): A winner must be determined. If the match ends in a tie, the winner is determined by the First Innings Lead (19 knockout matches have been decided using this rule).

Follow-On rules:

Group stage: If you are ahead by 200 points in the first game, you can force your opponent to follow.

Knockout stage: If you are ahead by 150 points in the first game, you can force your opponent to follow.
